A guidebook to character homes based on the architectural heritage of the Pacific Palisades & Altadena
Info
The New California Classics is a community design initiative created by more than 30 architects and interior designers from the design leadership network and save iconic architecture (both non-profit organizations) who share a passion for preserving the architectural heritage of Southern California. Together, this group studied the historic homes of the Palisades and surrounding areas to identify the defining styles and character that make our neighborhoods unique.
The outcome of this research is an online guidebook designed to help residents, builders, and designers who are rebuilding or remodeling. It offers a thoughtful reference for choosing styles, materials, and details that are true to California’s architectural roots.
Each style section features the defining characteristics that give these homes their identity — including window and door styles, rooflines, tile and lighting selections, and other architectural details that create authenticity and charm.
In addition to architectural guidance, the book includes sample elevations, floor plans, and landscape ideas with a focus on fire resilience and plantings that complement each style.
The goal of the New California Classics is to provide inspiration and clear direction for rebuilding with respect for our heritage — helping to preserve the timeless beauty, diversity, and character that make our California communities special.
The guide includes History, instruction, and detailed plans for seven distinct home styles that have shaped our region:
